Carver of the Month
David Babb
I was born and raised in Centralia, Illinois and graduated McKendree College
and Garrett Theological Seminary in Illinois. I pastored all sizes of
United Methodist Churches for forty-three years prior to retiring in 2001.
I began woodcarving in junior high school and making toys at first.
Cowboys, guns, ship models, and marionettes were my beginning. For many
years I only did an occasional carving. Twenty years ago I purchases some
good wood, some good tools, some books for ideas, and really began carving
in earnest. I do all subjects including western, religious, cariacture, and
Santas and Carousel figures. In retirement I am fulfilling my dream of
making lots of chips! I give programs using my woodcarvings to illustrate
on "The History and Legend of Santa Claus", "The Art and Joy of the American
Carousel," and "A Woodcarver Studies Jesus Christ". I have given 35
programs to various groups in churches and civic organizations in my two
years of residence in Indianapolis.
My woodcarving plans include continuing to do carousel figures and to begin
a series of carvings of Jesus Christ in an 18 inch size.
My wife Norma and I enjoy carving shows and are in process of attending
seven shows this year.
My other hobbies include camping, motorcycling, model trains, and
photography. I need another life-time to have the time to enjoy all of my
hobbies! I believe our Creator created us, his creatures, to be creative as
long as we are able!
